A Bold Indoor Landscape in an Unexpected Place

Set out to build the world’s first underground park, The Lowline is partnering with John Mini, Raad Studios, Mathews Nielsen and additional partners to prove that a first-of-its-kind solar technology can collect and pipe natural sunlight to dark, interior spaces and sustainably grow and maintain plants.

The Lowline Lab serves as the foundation for creating new ways to bring green spaces to dense urban areas. Located in an abandoned warehouse, The Lab simulates being underground and encourages visitors to imagine what would happen if you bring sunlight to unexpected spaces.

We collaborated to design an indoor landscape and plant palette that is both lush and sustainable, sourced the plants that would work in this environment and installed the landscape in a tight time frame. Today, we maintain the interior landscape of The Lowline Lab.

JMDL has been an amazing partner to work with not only in the execution but also the design of some of our most conceptual, cutting-edge work. Without them, realizing the Lowline would be basically impossible. We have found in JMDL such a good fit with such intellectual rigor that we are now working with them on both large and small projects around the world.

This project is what we’re all about… pushing the limits. This concept is a game-changer for our industry and cities across the world. If we can utilize sunlight in new places, we can bring more nature to our cities that are starved for it. It could open up a whole new field of horticulture. The collaboration with other teams was incredible. We all believe in the cause and possibilities.
