Bringing Holiday Spirit and Fantastical Spark

New York’s oldest hospital collaborated with our design and sales teams to reinvent their holiday installation and infuse it with fantasy and whimsy to inspire children. The installation was in coordination with a hospital exhibition of drawings created by children recovering in the hospital.

Weather patterns and traffic considerations are researched at least 3 times a day by the scheduling team. Weather is assessed to ensure we avoid inclement weather, such as blizzards and snow storms. Traffic considerations are critical in the greater NYC area to plan for the regular happenings that occur within New York, such as presidential visits, United Nations gatherings, and large scale construction sites that lead to street closures.

The children’s wing also overlooks the dramatic but serene I. M. Pei designed lobby atrium, which fuses NYC landmark architecture seamlessly with timeless contemporary design. The abundant light delivered by the magnificent glass atrium, as well as the children’s direct site lines to it, provided the perfect opportunity to create a fantasy winter scape that would evolve with the days altering light before a dramatic transformation at nightfall with a light show to reinvent the scene and ignite the children’s imagination.

The result was an installation that induced curiosity from the street and then delighted with surprises upon an adventure inside to explore this nontraditional installation still abundant with joy.

JOHN MINI DISTINCTIVE LANDSCAPES

The historic façade of the hospital overlooks the modern lobby carrying a whimsical forest of snow and shimmer. Filled with frozen birch branches and bathed in ever changing jewel tones, this mezzanine greets staff, patients and public upon arrival and was received with delight.

"

The originally proposed renderings for the lobby were based on the client’s intentions to celebrate the exhibition of artwork created by the patients in the children’s wing on display in the hospital.

"

This frozen fantasy forest concept evolved with client collaboration and colors and materials changed to match the custom theme developed on the tree. Their goal was to create a world filled with wonder that was just out of reach on the mezzanine, but always present while in the lobby.

A custom jewel toned theme was developed with teddy bears to match, which the public found so delightful that theft of the bears became an ongoing challenge demonstrated by this picture. Anything within reach became a target that even wiring the bears to the tree did not prevent.

The tree and lights reflection on the lobby floor at dusk appear celestial, delivering an interactive experience for the composition that was enhanced by the programmable light show within the trees.

The elevated tree in the back of the hospital was adorned with jewel toned bears to connect and respond to the artwork behind it, bringing holiday spirit and fantastical spark to the other entrance of the hospital.

"

Arrangements of the custom glittered palette birch branches were also placed at key hospital apex corridors to continue the fantasy journey for visitors and patients.

"

People demonstrate the colossal scale of the ceremonial space, which can quickly dwarf any installation components, especially on the mezzanine from a lower perspective. This in combination with tight budgets for a city hospital, was a challenge our teams embraced to deliver a unique and impactful design for a noble cause.

"

Snow blanket was manipulated to conceal the PVC that securely nested the taller birch trees, for a drift like effect behind the magical forest on view from the children’s wing at this angle.

"

The finishing touch to this children’s wonderland was a giant bear reaching the apex of the tree to look down and greet all those who enter. His peekaboo induced curiosity to visitors and patients for a playful introduction to the shimmering forest and its festive show of dancing, colorful lights through the branches.

There is a great number of children that walk through the doors of Bellevue Hospital, so our goal was a design that is soft, colorful and playful but yet still stood out in such a cavernous space. The teddy bear theme was a spot on hit! Not only did the children love it but the parents and hospital staff enjoyed it as well.
